WASHINGTON – Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) issued the following statement today on the 70th anniversary of the attack at Pearl Harbor, the surprise bombing by the Japanese on the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Hawaii that led to the U.S. entry into World War II:

“Today marks the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, the date President Roosevelt proclaimed would “live in infamy.” More than 2,400 Americans, including 23 Utahns, paid the ultimate price that fateful day to preserve our nation. Their heroic sacrifice united Americans all across the country and forged the courage and resolve that led to our victory in World War II over the forces of fascism. Seven decades later, their example continues to endure and to endear them to Americans, including a new generation of veterans who are carrying on their legacy by fighting for our freedoms in places such as Iraq and Afghanistan. I join with Utahns and other Americans today, in honoring their memory, thanking them for their sacrifice and in renewing our unwavering commitment to keep our country strong and the beacon of freedom to the world.”
