Distinguished Flying Cross Award
A B-17 pilot in World War II, Warren McAllister, left, received the Distinguished Flying Cross Award on July 1, 2004, for a heroic bombing run over Germany in 1945.Piloting a plane that had lost three engines, he stayed on board while his crew bailed out. Just as he was to leap out of the plane himself, he noticed the plane had dipped and turned, on course to possibly hit the crew in their parachutes. He quickly returned to the cockpit, straightened the plane, and jumped as the plane was 500 feet from the ground. After recovering from injuries suffered, he flew 23 more missions before returning home.
Many of McAllister's service records were destroyed in a fire in 1973, and Senator Hatch assisted him in securing the award for his distinguished service.

Hatch Congratulates Doc Lyle McNeal
Sen. Orrin Hatch meets with agriculture teacher Dr. Lyle G. McNeal from Utah State University’s Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences Department. McNeal was awarded Professor of the Year from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
“Doc” McNeal as he is known by his students, is known for his hands-on approach to teaching and his total dedication to his students. Over the years, he has received a number of awards, honors, and recognitions. Professor McNeal takes his students on field trips all around the western United States giving them opportunities to work with many different animals, because he feels students really learn “by doing.” His wife, Barbara, also made the trip.
McNeal presented Hatch with a resolution written by students in his sustainable agriculture class. The resolution states that “it is important and imperative for the future of agriculture that we as students provide input on, and shape to policy development and take action to support implementation processes in dealing with sustainable agriculture, rural development, and food security issues.”
