Washington – The U.S. Senate today passed a resolution, authored by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), to recognize April 30, 2008, as “Día de los Niños,” or the “Day of the Children.” This resolution calls on the American people to join with children, families, and community organizations to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities in subsequent years on April 30.

“No one values their children more highly than we do in the state of Utah,” Hatch said. “And we appreciate the cultural contribution made by Latin Americans in this regard. Día de los Niños is recognized in the state of Utah with events at places like schools, libraries, cultural centers, and even hospitals. Designating this Wednesday as a day to honor the children of our nation will help us affirm the significance of family, education, and community.”

Latin America nations, and others, celebrate Día de los Niños on April 30 to celebrate their countries’ children. Many Hispanic-American families continue the tradition of honoring their children by celebrating Día de los Niños in their homes.

“Children celebrate their parents on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day,” Hatch said. “So this is a great opportunity for grown-ups to celebrate the next generation. This day provides us with the chance to reflect on our children’s futures, help shape their dreams.”

Joining Hatch as original cosponsors of the resolution are Senators Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Larry Craig (R-Idaho), Richard Lugar (R-Ill.), Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho).
