Calls for Crackdown on Border Violence
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) today issued the following statement after Border Patrol agent Nicholas Ivie, a native of Provo, Utah, was shot to death by Mexican bandits near the U.S.-Mexico border:
“I am deeply saddened and angered by the senseless killing today of Border Patrol Agent Nicholas J. Ivie, who was gunned down by criminals in the Arizona desert as he went about his duty to protect our nation. By all accounts, Agent Ivie was a dedicated law enforcement professional, a leader in his church and in the community, and a loving husband and devoted father. During this difficult time, Elaine and I offer our sincerest condolences and heartfelt prayers to Agent Ivie’s wife Christy, their two daughters and to members of their extended family, as well as to the other officer – who has not yet been identified – who was wounded in the shootings.
“This tragedy further underscores the need to secure our nation’s porous border and crack down on the drug cartels and other violent criminals who are making a mockery of our laws and putting Americans across the nation in harm’s way. I will continue to press the Administration and do everything I can to ensure our border is secure, our citizens are protected and the perpetrators of this and other violent acts against our Border Patrol
agents are brought to justice.”
