U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Reps. Jim Matheson (UT-2) and Jason Chaffetz (UT-3) today issued the following statements after Utah Governor Gary Herbert selected Brig. General Jefferson S. Burton as the new Adjutant General of the state’s National Guard:

HATCH: “Maj. General Tarbet has served our great state with honor and distinction through some difficult times, including the dark days after September 11 and deployment of our loved ones oversees. He has my sincere gratitude and appreciation for his dedication to our country and to our state and its citizens. Utah’s National Guard has a deep bench of extremely qualified officers ready to serve. I look forward to working with General Burton as he steps into this new role.”

MATHESON: “I feel fortunate to have known and worked with Maj. General Tarbet on many issues affecting Utah and the United States. Through the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11th, two wars and multiple deployments for members of the Utah National Guard, he has been a cool head, a steady hand and a caring heart.  I extend my thanks for his service and best wishes for a well-deserved rest. I look forward to getting to know and working with our next Adjutant General.”

CHAFFETZ: “It’s been an honor to know and work with Maj. Gen. Tarbet. He’s truly a soldier's soldier.  He cares deeply about the troops and has been a tremendous leader during some difficult times.  His leadership during the Olympics and steadfast support of the troops during our country’s engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan speak highly of the character and dedication of this good man.  While Maj. Gen. Tarbet will be missed, I extend my warm welcome to General Burton and wish him all the best as he leads the valiant soldiers who serve faithfully and selflessly in Utah’s National Guard.”
