Washington, DC— Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the senior member and former Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of a Colorado baker who declined to make a wedding cake for a gay couple on religious grounds. The 7-2 decision held that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission violated the baker’s rights under the free exercise clause and expressed undue “hostility to religious beliefs.”

“I applaud today’s decision. Hostility toward religion has no place in government. At the same time, religious freedom means much more than freedom from government hostility. Courts must protect the ability of believers to freely live their faith and to express their religious beliefs openly and honestly.”
