Hatch Asks for Utahns' Help in Investigating IRS

Utah Senator Sets Up Website for Information About IRS Targeting as Part of Bipartisan Investigation into IRS

Today, U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) asked for Utahns to help in an investigation he’s launched into the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) targeting of conservative groups who filed for tax exempt status.  In an open letter and video message to Utahns, Hatch, the Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over the IRS, asked for those with information about IRS targeting to submit it through a form on his website, www.hatch.senate.gov, where that information will be sent to his investigative team.

“I’ve launched a bipartisan investigation along with Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Montana) to get to the facts.  Our investigation will be fair, it will be responsible, and make no mistake about it, it will get to the truth,” Hatch said.  “To accomplish that goal we not only need to know who knew what, and when in the Obama Administration, but we need to hear from those who were targeted.  I’m asking you, my fellow Utahns, to let me know if you or any groups you know were singled out for heightened scrutiny by the IRS, while filing for this 501 (c)(4) tax exempt status.”

My Fellow Utahns:

Our Republic was founded on a basic principle of equal treatment under the law.  The recent disclosure that the Internal Revenue Service targeted conservative groups filing for tax exempt status undermines Americans’ trust that their government will enforce the law blindly, without concern about race, religion, creed, or political belief.

In response, I’ve launched a bipartisan investigation along with Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Montana) to get to the facts.  Our investigation will be fair, it will be responsible, and make no mistake about it, it will get to the truth.  To accomplish that goal we not only need to know who knew what, and when in the Obama Administration, but we need to hear from those who were targeted.

That is why today, I’m asking you, my fellow Utahns, to let me know if you or any groups you know were singled out for heighted scrutiny by the IRS, while filing for this 501 (c)(4) tax exempt status.  This information will be given to our investigative team.

If you have this kind of information or you were targeted, please visit my website, www.hatch.senate.gov, and fill in the form.  This information will be strictly confidential and will not be released publicly.

I hope you will help and know that we are working to get to the bottom of this so this never, ever happens again.
